The Chamber of Commerce gives each business that registers in the trade register a code that indicates the economic activity of a business. This code system is called "Standard Business Indicator", SBI for short (previously BIK).
SBI is a hierarchical classification of economic activity and was set up by the CBS for dividing business units according to their main activity. SBI has several levels that are indicated by four or five figures. The first four figures of the SBI code are similar to the European NACE with a few exceptions. The fifth figure is a Dutch variant.
